Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - Vinny Guglietti hit his third home run of the season and the Ottawa Champions capitalized on some bizarre errors to beat the Trois-Rivières Aigles 5-4 in the opening game of a three-game series at RCGT Park on Friday.

Jared Mortensen recorded six strikeouts over 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs and walking four. Zach Vennaro (1-0) came into the game in the top of the eighth to earn the win.

Champions manager Sébastien Boucher thought his starting pitcher struggled a little bit but was impressed with his perseverance.

"Mortensen had a rough day, to be honest," Boucher said with a smile. "He didn't really have good command of his pitches but being a veteran guy he was able to work with it. He made a lot of pitches and got in deep counts throughout the entire guy but he was able to really fight through."

Steve Brown scored the go-ahead run after what looked like an easy out, but Aigles 1B Brandon Brosher came off the bag on the throw to allow Andy Mocahbee to reach first.

"We got a break on that one," said Boucher. "Something kind of fell in our favour and we were able to capitalize on it."

Guglietti came up clutch in the bottom of the eighth, smacking a two-run shot over the right field wall to tie the game.

"I really just sat on one pitch," said Guglietti. "I was looking for a fastball anywhere in the zone where I wanted it and I was lucky enough that he gave it to me. I put my best swing on it, tried to make sure I didn't miss it and sometimes you get lucky and square it up once in a while."

Trois-Rivières made it 4-2 when Jordan Caillouet bobbled a ground ball trying to throw to first with a runner on second. Guglietti tried to throw it back to Caillouet but the third-baseman wasn't there and the ball went into the bleachers, allowing Raphael Gladu to score.

Leonardo Reginatto made it 3-2 when he hit an RBI single to right in the bottom of the sixth that scored Maikol Gonzalez.

Michael Suchy drilled a three-run shot over the left field wall in the top of the sixth, scoring Gladu and Taylor Brennan, to put the Aigles up 3-1.

Guglietti drove in Jiandido Tromp with a sac fly deep to right to open the scoring for the Champions in the bottom of the first.

Brandon Barker threw six strikeouts over 5.2 innings, allowing an earned run with two walks.
