SIOUX FALLS, S. D. - Former RailCat Cristian Guerrero homered for the third straight game to jump-start a four-run third inning for the Pheasants as they beat the RailCats 4-1 in the series rubber match on Wednesday afternoon.
RailCats starter Morgan Coombs (1-1) had shutout the Pheasants on three hits through the first five innings and had a career-high six strikeouts, but ran into trouble in the sixth. With one out, he gave up a solo homer to left to Guerrero. Guerrero went 3-for-4 in the game and is now 9-for-25 (.360) with five homers and eight RBI in six games against his former team this season.
On the next pitch, Mark Shorey homered to left to make it 2-1. After Trevor Lawhorn doubled, Coombs was relieved by Marco Gonzales, who surrendered a two-run homer to Jake Taylor to cap the four-run inning.
The RailCats appeared headed toward a big first inning for the second straight game after scoring six in the first on Tuesday night. Adam Klein led off with a walk, Mike Massaro singled and Mike Coles hit an RBI single to center to score Klein. Rico Washington then ripped a single to right, but Massaro got caught in a rundown between third and home and tagged out. During that rundown, Washington strayed too far from first base and was also tagged out in a pickle as the RailCats were held to just one run in the inning.
Pheasants starter Mark Michael (2-2) settled down after the first inning, retiring nine in a row and 14 out of 15 hitters at one point. He allowed five hits and struck out six in seven innings for the win.
The RailCats return home on Thursday to begin a seven-game homestand with a four-game interleague series against Newark of the Can-Am League. First pitch on Thursday is at 7:10 p.m. and it will be the first Thirsty Thursday of the season, featuring $1 Miller Lite and MGD drafts. Derek Drage (1-1, 5.40) will start for Gary.
