For Fifth Time In Six Games, Diablos Lose By One Run
June 6, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release
AMARILLO, TX- The Diablos once again fell one run short in the finale of a six-game road trip and a three-game set with their divisional rival Amarillo Sox, losing by a final of 4-3 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Unlike Tuesday night, it was El Paso that had to fight back from an early deficit on Wednesday, falling behind Amarillo in the first inning on a two-run home run by Sox slugger Tim Alberts. The Diablos would eventually tie the score at 2-2, but never took the lead in falling to 3-16 on the season.
While the Diablos have relied on a solid offense to keep them in games throughout most of 2012, Amarillo starter Ryan Mitchell (2-0) limited El Paso to just three runs on five hits in seven solid innings after entering the game with an era of 11.46. Mitchell struck out six and walked three in earning his second victory of 2012.
Brian Joynt's two-run double gave him a team-leading 15 RBI's on the year and knotted the game in the fourth inning, but in the very next frame Harrison Kain doubled in Matt Tucker to give the Sox the lead back.
Another RBI hit from Alberts, this time a double in the fifth, stretched the lead to 4-2 for Amarillo. All four runs were charged to Diablos starter Reymond Cruz (1-1), who struck out seven and walked only one in six innings but still took his first loss.
The Diablos pulled to within one after a throwing error by Amarillo shortstop Jason White allowed Javier Brito to score in the seventh. But Sox relievers Andrew Bowman and Chase Johnson each threw a scoreless frame to finish off the three-game sweep and keep the Sox atop the South Division in the American Association.
Johnson pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save of 2012.
The Diablos will try and end the six game slide when they return home Thursday night to begin a series with the defending champion Grand Prairie Air Hogs. The Air Hogs swept the Diablos in the teams' first series of the year at QuikTrip Park. Right hander Scott Hodsdon is scheduled to start the opener at 7:05 p.m. (MST).
