Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Sioux City Explorers 11-7 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

Wichita twice trailed by five runs, but scored five in the bottom of the third to tie the game, and went ahead for good with a single run in the fourth.

Trailing 6-1 in the third, Jake Kahaulelio bunted for a single to lead off. John Rodriguez hit a groundball to second baseman Brian Bistagne that was misplayed into right field. The error allowed Kahaulelio to go to third base. Juan Richardson lined a single to left to score Kahaulelio and advance Rodriguez to second. After Mitch Einertson flied out to right field, C.J. Ziegler walked to load the bases with one out. David Peralta then lined a triple to the right-center field fence that cleared the bases. On the play, Ryan Priddy's relay throw to the plate was dropped by catcher Tyler Goodro and allowed Peralta to score the tying run.

Richardson made it 7-6 Wichita in the fourth on a groundout to third base that scored Ryan Khoury from third. Khoury walked leading off the inning and has now reached base in 14 consecutive games.

Wingnuts' starter Jose Perez held the Explorers at six runs into the top of the sixth. With the tying run on first and two outs, Nick Walters relieved Perez and struck out Wally Backman Jr. for the final out of the inning.

Walters and Jared Simon combined for a perfect seventh, allowing the Wingnuts to break the game open in the bottom half. Rodriguez led off with a groundball single to right and took third on a double to left-center from Richardson. Einertson made it 9-6 on a line drive single to left, while Ziegler capped off the rally with a monster, two-run home run to left-center. The home run extended Ziegler's hitting streak to 13 games. Ziegler has also reached base in all 19 of the Wingunts' games this season.

Sioux City scratched out a run in the eighth on a two-out double from Brandon Newton, before Matt Nevarez closed out the game with a perfect top of the ninth.

Ray Serrano gave the Explorers an early 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout. Sioux City added four in the second to go up 5-0. Newton drove in Priddy from third on a groundout to second base. A wild pitch, an error, and an RBI single from Kris Sanchez accounted for the other three runs.

After Mike Conroy singled home the Wingunts' first run with a two-out, RBI single to left in the second, Bistagne homered to left with two outs in the third to give Sioux City its second five-run lead of the night.

Perez earned the win, allowing six runs, four earned, in five and two-thirds innings. Perez allowed 10 hits, walked two, and struck out three.
