Guelph Topples Attack

Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack kicked off a full weekend of hockey by travelling to The Royal City for their 2nd tilt of the year with the Guelph Storm on Friday, Oct. 9.
A hard fought game between the squads resulted in Owen Sound's first regulation loss of the year, with the Storm coming out on top by a score of 3-1.
In the first period of Friday's game, Owen Sound and Guelph appeared content to continue their low-scoring ways when squaring off against each other.
After combining for just one goal in their last matchup, Friday's game saw neither team light the lamp in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The scoreless first was particularly painful for the Attack, as Owen Sound couldn't convert on a pair of Baywest Nissan Powerplay chances, but it also was a frame that saw netminder Michael McNiven turn aside all of Guelph's seven shots and send the teams to the intermission with goose-eggs on the scoreboard.
Scoring woes from the opening period seemed to follow the squads into the middle stanza, as goaltending continued to be the theme of the season series between the Attack and Storm.
In fact when the scoring commenced in the game, it was a Guelph goal that resulted from a broken play after Jarett Meyer crashed into the boards behind the Attack net.
Form forward Tyler Boston took advantage of the open space on the ice and banged hom a loose puck with 6:35 gone in the frame, putting Guelph up 1-0.
The Storm would then grab a two goal advantage thanks to James McEwan capitalizing on a big rebound off of McNiven's pads. The goal that put the home side up 2-0 came with 5:20 to play in the 2nd period.
McEwan's goal would hold up through 40 minutes of play, and the Attack looked to cut into Guelph's two goal cushion when the 3rd period commenced.
And it didn't take long for the Attack to do just that.
With under four minutes having expired in the period, Bryson Cianfrone beat a sprawling Justin Nichols on the rush after a Petrus Palmu shot bounced off of the Storm netminder's pads.
Josh Sterk added his sixth assist of the year on the play, which breathed new life into Owen Sound.
That new life seemed to result in the game tying goal, once again off of the stick of Bryson Cianfrone. However it was waived off after the referees determined that it was aided by a glove pass.
The disallowed goal would wind up making the difference, as the Attack failed to get any closer before McEwan added a third goal for the Storm with just 18.6 seconds left in the game.
Guelph's Justin Nichols was named the Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the game thanks to his impressive 38 save performance. McEwan earned 2nd star honours, while Petrus Palmu was named 3rd star of the game.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal favoured the Attack on the evening, finishing at 39-23 for the visitors.
The Attack are right back in action on Saturday night, when they host the London Knights at the Bayshore at 7:30pm before finishing up their weekend set with a tilt against the Ottawa 67's on Sunday at 2:00pm.
Fans are reminded that Sunday's contest is proudly presented by the Investment Planning Counsel and features free popcorn for the first 200 children through the door, jersey giveaways, and a skate with the team following the game.
