Growlers to Play July 3-6 Games at Homer Stryker Field
July 1, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - With the field under almost two feet of water early Saturday morning, the prospect of playing another game at Homer Stryker Field looked bleak for the Kalamazoo Growlers. However, with 24 hour maintenance and Mother Nature on their side, the Growlers are happy to announce that this weekend's July 3-6 games will be played at Homer Stryker Field.
Great news arrived on Monday afternoon when they learned water could begin being pumped out of the stadium, back into the river. With crews working around the clock, the Growlers were able to clear the outfield and concourse areas of water overnight. An additional pump was added Tuesday as well.
"We can't thank all the crews enough that have dedicated their time and resources to get Homer Stryker Field back." says Brian Colopy, Growlers Vice President. "We've been blown away by the community support. From the AZO Airport stepping up to sponsor the night, to fan's offering to volunteer and help: the community has truly come together to make these games happen."
Over the past 5 days, the Growlers received hundreds of requests for volunteer support. While the Growlers say volunteers shouldn't be necessary for clean up, they do encourage fans to help by simply attending this weekend's festivities.
Coincidently, both Friday and Saturday's games against the Lakeshore Chinooks will be played at 5:05pm (gates open at 4:05pm) as makeup doubleheaders for the postponed games on June 27 and 28. Each game will last 7 innings with a 30 minute small break in-between games.
Friday, July 3 is MLB All-Star and former Northwoods League alum Chris Sale bobblehead giveaway night presented by Edward Rose & Sons. A flat screen TV will also be given away to one lucky fan courtesy of Walmart/Sam's Club. Saturday, July 4 is the Growlers highly anticipated Red, White & BOOM Night presented by the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport. The night will feature the Inflatamaniacs entertainment act and special patriotic jerseys that include an in-game silent auction. All proceeds of the auction will go towards the repairs and damages associate with the flood. Lastly, the night will be capped off with the largest 4th of July fireworks show in Kalamazoo!
July 5-6 the Growlers will host the 1st half playoff qualifier, the Green Bay Bullfrogs. Sunday, July 5 is another Family day at the Park with "Archaeology Night" presented by the Kalamazoo Valley Museum where kids can dig on the infield following the game for prizes including Fossil watches courtesy of UniQ Jewelry Gallery. Monday, July 6 is another Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial Make a Difference Monday with Autobody USA presenting the non-profit of the night, the SPCA of Southwest Michigan.
