Wisconsin Rapids Blanked in Pitchers' Duel

July 1, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release

Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. - The Rafters had a runner at third in three of the final four innings, but couldn't get a run across as they lost to the Kenosha Kingfish, 1-0. The lone run of the game was scored in the third inning on a bases loaded walk, giving Kenosha an early one-run lead which held up in the end.

Pitching was the story of the game, as neither team could get the bats going with runners in scoring position. The Kingfish managed six hits off Rafters pitching, while Wisconsin Rapids got on three times via the hit. All nine hits in the game were singles.

Brian Russell (College of Staten Island) took the loss for Wisconsin Rapids despite a strong start. Pitching around five walks, the righty from Staten Island, N.Y., allowed just one run on six hits while striking out a pair. Josh Serio picked up the win for Kenosha, his Northwoods League-leading sixth win, throwing five innings of one-hit ball. JR Holloway came on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and got the one out save.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow night at Witter Field with the first pitch coming at 7:05 p.m. Marshfield Clinic will help start the Fourth of July festivities with a fireworks extravaganza following the game. All fans in attendance on July 2nd will also receive a lighted baton to enhance the atmosphere at Witter Field during the fireworks display. Tomorrow is also a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, featuring two for one domestic taps from the time the gates open at 6:05 p.m. until the end of the 5th inning.
