Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
The Kalamazoo Growlers losing streak has extended to four as they traveled back to Kalamazoo on Tuesday to face the Kenosha Kingfish at Homer Stryker Field. Kenosha used 13 hits to defeat Kalamazoo on the road, 12-5.
Ryan Bull (Notre Dame) went 3-for-4 for the Growlers with a homer, three RBI and a run scored. Jared Kujawa (Western Michigan) and John Rubino (Eastern Michigan) each picked up a hit and a run scored at the top of the lineup for Kalamazoo.
The Kingfish (14-12) came out of the gates with three quick runs in the top of the first inning. Pat Porter (Ohio State) knocked a two-run double off Ryan Colegate (Ohio Dominican), and Porter would record the third run later in the inning, after a Colegate wild pitch.
Despite the three-run hole in the first inning, the Growlers (10-18) came back with five of their own runs in the bottom of the first inning, when Bull smacked a three-run homer over the left field wall to give Kalamazoo a 5-3 lead after just the first inning.
Both teams would settle in after the hectic first inning, but the Kingfish were able to regain the lead and tack on three more insurance runs. Kenosha added one run in the fourth, one more in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning to give them their eight runs off 11 hits.
The Kingfish added four runs in the bottom of the eighth, including a two-out, three-run home run off the bat of nine-hole hitter Spencer Gaa (Bradley).
Colegate was on the bump for Kalamazoo on Tuesday night, and the sophomore right-hander struggled early, but after a three-run first inning, he settled in and over 4 2/3 innings, he allowed six runs off seven hits, while walking three and striking out two.
The Growlers totaled four errors, a team-high for their inaugural 2014 season in the Northwoods League.
Kalamazoo looks to put a tally in the win column on Wednesday against Kenosha for the series finale. Ryan Smoyer is scheduled to make the start for the Growlers and looks to build on his last start against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters last week. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Homer Stryker Field.
