Mallards Downed by Woodchucks at the "Duck Pond"

Madison, WI - June 24, 2014. The Madison Mallards (15-11) fell to the Wisconsin Woodchucks (17-10) tonight at the "Duck Pond" by a score of 7-2.

Mallards starter Sterling Sharp (Eastern Michigan) went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits, walking one while striking out two.

The Woodchucks runs came sporadically, scoring three in the first, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth.

Woodchucks pitcher Robby Medel (TCU) tossed five innings, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. He was aided by three different Woodchuck relievers, who held the Mallards scoreless in the last four innings and offensively by third baseman Paul Dejong (Illinois State), who went 4-for-5 with two RBI.

The Mallards scored one run in the first after center fielder Will Krug (Illinois) tagged from third on a sacrifice fly from catcher Austin Barr (Stanford).

They would add another in the second when Krug attempted to steal second and was caught in a pickle after a pickoff attempt, and right fielder Brian Rodemoyer (Illinois State) snuck home from third to bring the Mallards tally to two. Rodemoyer was 3-for-3 on the night with three singles and a walk.

Tomorrow, the Mallards stay at the "Duck Pond" to wrap up their two game series against the Woodchucks at 7:05 pm. Wednesday is EMS Appreciation Night and will feature a Meriter Sunscreen Giveaway. The Mallards will also giveaway Bucky Book's to the first 1,000 fans.
