Mallards Aim to Build Upon Win After Two Game Road Trip

Madison, WI - June 24, 2014. The Madison Mallards (15-10) return to the "Duck Pond" tonight to take on the Wisconsin Woodchucks (16-10) at 7:05 pm after splitting a two game road series against the Alexandria Blue Anchors (6-21) in Alexandria, Minnesota.

Mallards starter Sterling Sharp (Eastern Michigan) will square off against Woodchucks pitcher Robby Medel (TCU). Sharp leads the Mallards in strikeouts with 22 in just 17.2 innings pitched. In his last outing for the team, Sharp pitched five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out three. He was the hard luck loser as the Mallards were shut out by the Lakeshore Chinooks 2-0.

Medel, a 6'4", 170-pound righty out of Arlington, Texas has appeared in eight games for the Woodchucks and holds a 2.66 ERA in 23.2 innings of work. In his last game on June 18th, Medel went six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two in a 6-2 win over the Green Bay Bullfrogs.

Last night, the Mallards beat the Blue Anchors by a score of 2-0, highlighted by superb pitching from five different Mallards pitchers and a solo home run by third baseman Trent Higginbothem (North Florida) in the 9th to cement the clubs 15th victory.

Starter Rob McDonnell received the win, going 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and four walks while striking out three. Closer Tim Black retired three of the four batters he faced in the ninth to get his eighth save of the year.
