Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Florence, KY - The Gateway Grizzlies out-hit the Florence Y'alls on Tuesday night, but stranded 10 runners on base in a 6-2 loss at Thomas More Stadium, dropping the series opener.
Zac Ryan (1-1) held his own in the first two innings, but ran into trouble in the third when Florence used the long ball to go ahead. Craig Massey led off with a solo shot, his first of the season, and after a single, Brennan Price curled a two-run homer around the pole in left field to make it a 3-0 game.
Florence then chased Ryan with a pair of one-out hits in the fourth, and Massey reached on an error to make the score 4-0, followed by a Ray Zuberer double that plated two and made it a 6-0 game. The Grizzlies' bullpen held the line from there, with Nathanial Tate tossing three innings in his pro debut and only allowing the Zuberer double, and getting around five walks with two double play ground balls. Zac Treece and Nate Garkow backed up the rookie with scoreless appearances of their own.
The Grizzlies' offense continued to struggle to score runs, as Nathan Florence (4-1) shut them out until the seventh inning, when after a Jairus Richards single and a D.J. Stewart double set Gateway up, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Mark Vierling cut the deficit to 6-2. Gateway also got two runners on base in the eighth and ninth against Carter Poiry, but did not score, suffering the loss.
The Grizzlies will look to bounce back tomorrow night, June 21, at 5:31 p.m. CT, with Joey Gonzalez on the mound against the Y'alls and right-hander Edgar Martinez at Thomas More Stadium.
