Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies trailed 4-2 against the Schaumburg Boomers going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but made a comeback to take the lead for good, scoring five runs with two outs on three critical hits back-to-back-to-back, and warding off a late charge to win 7-6 at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

For the second straight night, Schaumburg got the scoring started when Sam Claycamp hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to take an early 2-0 lead. But Gateway answered in the bottom of the frame when Jay Prather mashed a solo home run to make it 2-1. In the bottom of the third, the Grizzlies added another run when Peter Zimmermann grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2-2.

But the Boomers got the lead back in the the top of the fourth inning, as Clint Hardy hit a two-run home run to make it 4-2. Boomers starter Erik Martinez (2-3) then retired 12 Grizzlies batters in a row, holding the lead intact.

But in the bottom of the seventh inning, Jose Rosario singled with one out to break up the streak, and Abdiel Diaz singled with two outs. Andrew Penner then drove in Rosario on an RBI single to make it 4-3, and Isaac Benard followed by ripping a go-ahead, two-run double to put Gateway in front 5-4. Trevor Achenbach followed Benard after a pitching change with a two-run home run, his team-best tenth of the season, to expand the Grizzlies' lead to 7-4.

Schaumburg again threatened in the top of the eighth, as William Salas led off with a solo home run to make it 7-5. The Boomers then loaded the bases with no outs, but Nick Kennedy allowed only one inherited run to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Claycamp to make the score 7-6, getting out of further trouble with the lead intact. Reed Hayes then retired the Boomers in order with two strikeouts to earn his fourth save closing out the series-clinching victory.

The Grizzlies will conclude their nine-game homestand looking for a series sweep against the Boomers on Thursday night, June 23, at 6:45 p.m. J.P. Williams will take the mound for Gateway against Blake Stelzer for Schaumburg at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
