Capitales Hold on to Win Pitcher's Duel with Boulders
June 22, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
New York Boulders News Release
Quebec Capitales' starter Codie Paiva and three relievers teamed up to outduel New York's Dan Wirchansky and come away with a 2-1 win on Wednesday at Stade Canac in Quebec City after the Boulders had the tying run thrown out at the plate in the top of the ninth inning.
Neither team's offense could get untracked on this night - the Boulders finished with eight hits - but had only five through eight innings, while Wirchansky, in going eight innings, held the Capitales to just four hits. Wirchansky walked one, struck out eight and needed 96 pitches to go the distance.
Wirchansky was perfect through three innings for the Boulders before issuing a lead-off walk to David Glaude to open the fourth. Wirchansky would pick Glaude off of first base, then retire Garrett Takamatsu before surrendering his first hit of the night, a two-out double by T.J. White, who was stranded at second when Kyle Crowl bounced out to short.
The Capitales finally broke through against the lefthander in the sixth. Blake Berry led off with a single and was sacrificed to second before Glaude lined a triple to center that put Quebec up 1-0. Takamatsu followed with an RBI single to increase the Capitales' lead to 2-0.
Wirchansky retired White and Crowl to end the frame without any further damage.
Meanwhile, Quebec starter Codie Paiva matched Wirchansky zero for zero through the top of the sixth. Before giving way to Henry Omana to start the seventh, Paiva allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out five as he kept New York off the scoreboard.
Omana and Marshall Shill tossed a scoreless inning apiece before yielding to Samuel Adames in the ninth. Adames was touched up for a run and avoided blowing the save when the tying run was thrown out at the plate.
The Boulders' offense showed some life in the ninth inning. Giovanni Garbella led off with a single and scored when Francisco Del Valle followed with a long double to left-center. After Austin Dennis struck out, Gian Martellini singled to left, but Quebec outfielder Pedro Gonzalez made a perfect throw to catcher Reece Yeargain, who applied the tag on Del Valle.
Gabriel Garcia then bounced out to shortstop to end the game.
Paiva's win improved him to 3-2 on the year, while the loss left Wirchansky at 3-2 on the season. Despite the rough ninth inning, Adames was credited with his ninth save of the season.
