Grizzlies fall to Miners in extras

SAUGET, IL-The Southern Illinois Miners scored four times in the top of the 11th inning Monday night to defeat the Gateway Grizzlies 10-6 in front of 2,637 at GCS Ballpark.

Southern Illinois (13-9) used three hits, a walk and a hit batter to push across the four runs. Jereme Milons and Tony Roth each had two-run hits in the inning for the Miners. John Maschino (1-1) suffered the loss for the Grizzlies, allowing all four runs.

The Grizzlies (7-15) trailed 6-4 going to the bottom of the ninth. Dan Maycock was hit by a pitch and Stephen Holdren singled to make it two on with two outs. Charlie Lisk then lined a game-tying two-run triple over Miners' center-fielder Travon Jackson, who slipped in the wet outfield.

The Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead in the first inning Monday, when Lisk singled to score Brad Thoma, then Rothford grounded out to score Holdren.

Milons and Joey Metropoulos hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to tie the game. Brandon Peters put the Grizzlies back on top with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. The Grizzlies extended the lead to 4-2 when Peters scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

The Miners (13-9) used the long ball in the sixth tie the game again. Brad Miller hit a two-run home run off Grizzlies starter Joel Boeschen to even the game 4-4.

Boeschen went seven innings, allowing five runs on five hits. He struck out eight and did not get a decision.

Lisk finished the night 2-4 with the three RBIs. He also walked and was hit by a pitch. He leads the Frontier League with 28 RBIs. Joseph Scaperotta was 3-5. Jareck West was 2-5 with a pair of doubles.
