Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers and Traverse City Beach Bums took turns with the lead throughout Monday night's game, but Andrew Davis' seventh inning homer proved to be the difference as the Crushers took the opening game of the series by the final of 8-5.

Davis hit a two-run shot to right off of Beach Bums rookie right-hander Ryan Kruzska to break a five-all tie. "It was a fastball that was a little inside," Davis said afterwards. "I look for fastballs on pretty much every pitch and he threw me one on a good count." The Crushers would then add an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Brad Griffiths that plated Tim Binkoski.

The game went back and forth all night long. Lake Erie took a one-nothing lead in the second on an Arden McWilliams RBI triple, but Traverse City used RBI singles from John Alonso and Brian Lapin to take a 2-1 lead in the third. Lapin would drive home another run in the fifth to give his team a 3-1 advantage. Lake Erie put a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a Jodam Rivera RBI groundout. The Crushers then took the lead back in the sixth on McWilliams' two-run double and an RBI single by Wayne Bond. But the lead was short lived, as Lapin struck again in the seventh with a two-run single to set the stage for Davis' heroics.

"We emphasize having mental toughness and being able to overcome adversity on this team and it looks like it's starting to sink in now," said Manager John Massarelli.

Cristobal Mata worked an inning and two-thirds in relief to earn his second win of the year and Jacinto Gonell tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his third save.

The homestand continues Tuesday morning for the Crushers as they'll play host to the Beach Bums starting at 11:05 AM. Left-hander Kevin Skogley will get the start for Lake Erie.
