February 6, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
Boise, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads added a late empty-net goal to defeat the Utah Grizzlies (20-17-3-4) 3-1 Wednesday night in Boise.
The loss is Utah's first in regulation in exactly three weeks, snaps their five-game winning streak and also their eight-game unbeaten streak at 7-0-1-0.
ECHL Goaltender of the Month Aaron Dell turned in another great effort stopping 25 of 27 shots as Utah goaltending allowed two goals or less for the ninth time in ten games. The loss ends a personal five-game winning streak for Dell who drops to 13-4-0-1.
After logging only nine shots through two periods and trailing 2-0 entering the third, the Grizzlies got on the board with a power-play goal from Kris Hogg with 9:12 left in regulation as he scored his ninth of the year. Phil Mangan started the play with time running down on the Grizzlies power-play and Scarsella and Vallorani picked up assists leading Hogg up ice.
On the ensuing shift after the goal, the Grizzlies came close to tying the contest and then were whistled for a penalty that they successfully killed.
The Grizzlies thought that they had tied the game with just under three minutes left, but the goal was waved off after the play was correctly ruled offside and after a timeout to go six-on-five with an extra-attacker, the Steelheads found an empty net with 23 seconds left after another Utah close call.
The Steelheads scored a goal with an odd-man rush in each the first and second period to build a 2-0 lead.
Utah continues their nine-game road stretch Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. and Sunday in Ontario at 4 p.m.
