Independence, Missouri - The Utah Grizzlies fall 4-3 to the Kansas City Mavericks to split the 2 game weekend series on Saturday night.
Kansas City scored first as David Dziurzynski scored a power play goal with 7:31 left in the first period. The Grizzlies quickly responded as Taylor Richart scored a power play goal with 6:18 left in the period. It was Richart's 6th goal of the season. It stayed a 1-1 game the rest of the first period as the Mavericks outshot Utah 12 to 8.
The Grizzlies scored first in the second period as Caleb Herbert scored his 23rd goal of the season. Herbert has scored 4 goals in his last 3 games and is a prime candidate for ECHL player of the week.
Kansas City scored exactly 2 minute into the second period as Mike McMurtry scored his first goal in a K.C uniform. Darian Dziurzynski scored his 14th goal of the season with 3:02 left in the second frame. JT Henke responded with a rebound goal with 1:11 left in the period. It was Henke's 13th goal of the season. Henke ended the night with 1 goal and 1 assist for Utah.
The Mavericks scored the only goal in the third period as Darian Dziurzynski scored his second of the game and 15th of the season.
Eric Freschi had 2 assists for the Grizzlies in the loss. Freschi had 1 goal and 2 assists in the 2 game series against his former team, the Mavericks.
Mason McDonald got the win in goal for Kansas City. He stopped 24 of 27 shots. Kevin Carr stopped 20 of 24 for the Grizzlies, who won 5-1 on Friday night.
The Grizzlies head on the road for games on January 29th and 30th against the Tulsa Oilers. Face-off from the BOK Center will be at 6:00 pm mountain time both nights. Next home game for the Grizzlies is February 6th against the Idaho Steelheads. Tickets are available now at utahgrizzlies.com.
Grizzlies note: Defenseman Kevin Davis was recalled from the Grizzlies to the AHL's Colorado Eagles. Davis appeared in the game Friday night for Utah and was in the Eagles lineup on Saturday night against Ontario.
