Fresno Grizzlies News Release

The Fresno Grizzlies fell to the Salt Lake Bees 12-10 in ten innings Thursday night at Chukchansi Park. Fresno trailed by seven runs heading to the bottom of the fourth before battling back to tie the game in the seventh. They finally succumbed to defeat in extra innings, with closer James Hoyt receiving the loss. MLB rehabber Andrelton Simmons (3-for-5) knocked a double and five RBI in the Bees' win.

The Grizzlies scored first in the bottom of the first from a Preston Tucker sacrifice fly to center. It was his third consecutive sacrifice fly to center, dating back to Tuesday's game against the El Paso Chihuahuas. Fresno led 1-0 after one inning.

The Bees answered back in the top of the second when Kyle Kubitza hit a two-run home run to right. Later, Simmons hit a chopper down the third base line, beating out a throw to first and extending the lead to 3-1.

Salt Lake added six runs to their lead in the top of the third. Erik Kratz (2-for-4) singled to left, scoring Kubitza and Sherman Johnson. Then, Quintin Berry (3-for-5) doubled to left, knocking in Ryan Jackson (2-for-3). Simmons continued the scoring by doubling down the third base line, knocking in three more Bees. The double by Simmons ended Grizzlies' starter Tommy Shirley's night. He lasted two and one third innings, allowing nine runs (all earned) on ten hits, while walking three and striking out two in a no-decision. After three innings, the Bees led 9-1.

The Grizzlies scored in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Heineman hit a RBI single to left, scoring A.J. Reed. Fresno trailed 9-2 after four innings.

Simmons again reached base with a RBI bloop single to left, giving the Bees a 10-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

Fresno cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth when Reed doubled down the first base line, scoring Danny Worth (3-for-5) and Tucker. The Grizzlies trailed 10-4 after five innings.

Andrew Aplin (3-for-5) started the Fresno comeback in the bottom of the sixth with a double to right, scoring Jon Kemmer. This would be the last straw for Bees' starter Nate Smith. He went five and one third innings, allowing 12 hits, six runs (five earned) while striking out four. Tucker added a fielder's choice RBI after the pitching change. Then Colin Moran hit a sharp liner to center, adding another Grizzly run. Fresno trailed 10-7 after six innings.

The Grizzlies rallied in the bottom of the seventh when Aplin singled to right, scoring Jon Singleton. Then a Worth single to left, scored Kemmer. Finally, a Bees error allowed a third Grizzly run to score. Fresno tied the game at ten after seven innings.

The Bees broke the tie in the top of the tenth when Ji-Man Choi hit a two-run single to right, giving Salt Lake a 12-10 lead.

The hit sealed the win for the Bees after closer Al Albuquerque struck out the side in the bottom of the tenth. Game two of the four game series will match Salt Lake RHP Kyle McGowin (2-2, 5.51) versus Fresno RHP Brad Peacock (0-2, 5.94). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT in Downtown Fresno.
