DES MOINES - The Round Rock Express (32-27) scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the Iowa Cubs (29-29) 11-4, Friday night at Principal Park in front of a season high 12,909 fans. The Express blasted three home runs, including back-to-back shots from Justin Ruggiano and Drew Robinson, and knocked 17 hits to take the blowout victory.
Right-hander Jake Buchanan (5-4) got the start for the I-Cubs and was chased after four innings as he gave up seven earned runs on 12 hits. He walked none and struck out five.
Righty Chi Chi Gonzalez (3-5) got the start for the Express and worked six quality innings to earn his third win of the season. Gonzalez allowed four hits, one walk and hit two batters, while striking out five and did not allow a run to score.
The Express' bats were hot from the start as Delino Deshields led off the game with a single up the middle. Joey Gallo brought in the first run on a two-RBI double to deep center field, before Ruggiano and Robinson followed with their back-to-back homers to give the Express the 5-0 lead.
The Express widened the gap with a pair of runs in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Brett Nicholas and a two-run homer from Doug Bernier.
The I-Cubs broke the shutout in the eighth that began when Kristopher Negr?"n led off with a single to left center. Willson Contreras brought in Negr?"n with a deep shot off the left-field wall that gave the I-Cubs their first run. Daniel Vogelbach reached base on his 37th walk of the year, which tops the PCL, before Matt Murton brought in Contreras with a double of his own down the left-field line. Jeimer Candelario kept the inning going when he reached base on an errant throw that brought in Vogelbach and Murton to give Iowa four total runs in the inning.
Contreras finished with three of the I-Cubs' seven hits and extended his hitting streak to 16, the longest of his career and longest active streak of the PCL. He has now reached base in 46 of 49 games this season, while moving his average to .349.
