MARION, Ill.- The Gateway Grizzlies built a 3-0 lead Friday night, then hung on for a 3-2 win over the Southern Illinois Miners in the opener of a three-game series at Rent One Park. It is the Grizzlies third win in a row.

The win, coupled with a River City loss moves the Grizzlies to just a game and a half out of second place and the final playoff spot in the West Division.

Breck Draper put the Grizzlies on the board in the second inning with his 10th home run of the year. It followed a Jason Patton single, and put Gateway (48-38) up 2-0. Tyler Heil singled in the third inning to drive home Matty Johnson to make it 3-0.

Draper finished 1 for 4. Heil was 2 for 4.

Southern Illinois (60-28), who clinched the West Division title a night earlier, scored single runs in the third and the sixth innings for the 3-2 final.

Both teams had chances late to add to the score. Southern Illinois left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Grizzlies left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning.

Josh Whitlock (2-10) earned his first win in a Grizzlies uniform. Whitlock pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked five and struck out five. David Miller followed Whitlock and did not allow a run in 2/3 of an inning. Nick Walters earned his third save, throwing three scoreless innings. He struck out four.
