Washington Wild Things News Release
Crestwood, Ill. - A four-run second inning powered the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, to a 5-3 victory over the Windy City Thunderbolts Friday night.
Eric Stephens led off the top of the second with a double and then advanced to third on a single by Wilson Matos. He then scored when Delaney hit into an error by Windy City third baseman Nick Kuroczko. Matos scored on a sacrifice bunt by Billy O'Conner, and after Denny Duron walked, Chris Sidick drove in two runs with a single and error by leftfielder Ryan Basham.
The Wild Things added another run in the fifth to go up 5-0. Jon Kourie hit a two-out double to drive in Sidick, who had walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Washington starter Jeff Sonnenberg pitched 8.1 innings and allowed three runs, one in the bottom of the eighth and two in the ninth. Back-to-back two-out hits by Ryan Basham and Kyle Aukhus allowed Basham to score and put Windy City on the board in the eighth.
Then in the ninth, Michael Torres hit an RBI double to score Mike Mooney. After Sonnenberg left the game, reliever Kevin Hammons gave up a single and then Torres scored on an RBI ground out by Brandon Anderson. After walking Gilberto Mejia to allow the tying run on base with two outs, Hammons was able to make the final out himself when Basham hit a line drive back to the mound.
With the win, Sonnenberg improved his record to 6-7. He gave up 9 hits and struck out three. Kevin Hammons threw the final two-thirds of an inning to earn the save.
Windy City starter Sean Toler, who earned the first win of his professional career against the Wild Things and had been undefeated since, lost the first game of his career and dropped his record to 7-1. He pitched six innings allowing five runs.
The Wild Things continue their nine-game road trip to conclude the 2010 season tomorrow night with Windy City at 8:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 7:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. Season tickets for 2011, the Wild Things 10th season, are on sale now. Call the box office at 866-456-WILD for details.
