MARION, Ill. - The Miners offense left 10 runners on base as they dropped the first game of the series, 3-2, to Gateway Friday night. The game began the final homestand of the 2010 regular season. Brett Scarpetta allowed three runs in seven-plus innings of work and took his fifth loss of the season. Gateway's Josh Whitlock gave up two runs in five and a third innings and improved to 2-10 with the win. Nick Walters stifled potential Miners rallies in the final three innings to take home his third save of the year.

Tyler Bullock stayed hot for the Miners with two more hits in the game, giving him 10 total hits in his last 17 at-bats. Jereme Milons reached base three times versus Gateway pitching, but was left stranded twice and thrown out once trying to steal third base. However, he did steal his league-leading 39th stolen base, which also set a new Miners single-season record.

Gateway hitters barely mustered more than the Miners, scoring three runs off seven hits. Breck Draper put the first two runs on the board in the game with a line-drive two-run home run in the second inning, which gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. Tyler Heil added two hits and drove in Gateway's only other run.

Miners starter Brett Scarpetta pitched well once again, but received little run support as the Miners rested some of their regulars with the division crown secured the night before. Scarpetta struck out two and walked three en route to his fourth loss of the season.

Saturday the Miners will have righty Randy Johnson (0-1, 3.60) on the mound against Gateway right-hander Adrian Garza (0-0, 4.92) for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from Rent One Park. Gateway will be trying to take their second straight game against the Miners after the Grizzlies climbed to just one and a half games back of the wildcard with their Game 1 victory.
