Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA - A happy beginning took a wrong turn for the Fresno Grizzlies in their double-header against the Tacoma Rainiers Thursday night.
After dominating the Rainiers (58-68) for the first six innings of game one, the Grizzlies (64-62) would fumble it away in seven innings, losing 3-2 before dropping the second game in a 6-5 slugfest.
The Grizzlies and Rainiers combined for five home runs in game two, with three coming off the bats of Tacoma hitters and two off the bats of Fresno players. Fresno starter Travis Blackley took the loss for Fresno after giving up six runs in four and two-thirds innings pitched.
Even with five extra-base hits in the second game, the Grizzlies were unable to come all the way back to earn the win. Tacoma's Brad Thomas earned the win for the Rainiers, while Jose De La Cruz earned his first save for Tacoma.
The first game of the double-header seemed like it would be signed, sealed and delivered for the Grizzlies, but a two-run rally in the seventh inning by the Rainiers completed a three-run comeback to hand the Grizzlies a 3-2 loss.
Fresno starter Jonathan Sanchez started for the first time this season, throwing four innings, while allowing just three hits and striking out five Tacoma batters. Fresno's Nate Schierholtz picked up two hits in the game, while catcher Eliezer Alfonzo now has a hit in all five games he has played with the Grizzlies.
