Grizzlies Battle Back Down 3-1 in 3rd for OTL Point

Anchorage, Alaska - The Alaska Aces defeated the Utah Grizzlies 4-3 in overtime Wednesday evening at Sullivan Arena as the two rivals opened four games in eight nights.

The Grizzlies battled back down 1-0 and then 3-1 in the third period to earn the standings point and also had a potential go ahead goal and a hat trick by Barry Almeida disallowed on the power-play by referee Andrew Wilk after he originally signaled goal as the game went down the stretch in the third.

Utah stormed back, outshooting Alaska 18-6 after falling behind 3-1 on a 4-on-4 breakaway goal 1:59 into the third.

Barry Almeida's second goal of the night 3:35 into the third period made it 3-2 in his first game back after missing nine games injured. Almeida finished off a three-on-two from Alex Krushelnyski and Mathieu Aubin.

The Grizzlies tied things up 6:20 into the third period as Jacob Johnston threw in a loose puck after Brent Gwidt and Johnnie Searfoss roared into the zone and got some good looks.

Almeida and the Grizzlies appeared to have taken a 4-3 lead with 7:51 left in regulation as referee Andrew Wilk initially signaled goal, but after conferring; waved off the goal in front of the timekeeper's booth. Michael Pelech fed the puck to Almeida who walked in and backhanded the puck on Alaska goaltender Niklas Lundstrom.

The Grizzlies tied the game at one 1:36 after Alaska scored the game's first goal. Vinny Scarsella pulled the trigger in the slot in transition and after it bounced off of Lundstrom, Folkes and Almeida crashed the net for Barry's first goal of the game.

Grizzlies goaltender Igor Bobkov stopped 18 of 22 in the overtime loss.

The Grizzlies continue in Alaska Friday and Saturday at 9:15 p.m.

Utah returns home to host Alaska Wednesday, January 7 for Wild Wednesday with $2 Soft Drinks, $2 Draft Beers and $5 Student Tickets.

The Grizzlies next home weekend is Friday, January 9 and Saturday, January 10 when they will host Stockton at 7 p.m. each night. January 10 is Star Wars Night and fans are invited to come in costume.
