Ontario Reign News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (17-10-2-4), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, rallied for the second time in as many nights to defeat the Stockton Thunder (13-19-1-0) by a 4-3 score in front of a crowd of 4,104 on Wednesday night at Stockton Arena.
Stockton opened scoring in the first period when James Henry won an offensive zone face-off back to John Ryder, who unloaded a shot that beat Joe Cannata at 5:58.
Exactly a minute later, Peter Sivak extended the Thunder lead to two goals when he snapped a shot past Cannata's blocker at the right circle at 6:58.
The Reign cut Stockton's lead in half while on the power-play, after Derek Couture knocked Maxim Kitsyn's rebound past Shane Owen at 16:39; Tyler Scofield received the secondary assist.
The Thunder regained their two-goal lead in the second period when Sivak fed Ryan Hayes in the slot, and Hayes snapped a shot past Cannata's blocker at 7:35.
Ontario responded when Geoff Walker redirected Rocco Carzo's blast from the left side past Owen at 11:53. Everett Sheen earned the secondary assist.
In the third period, the Reign drew level with Stockton when Judd Blackwater took a pass from Scofield and carried the puck from behind the Thunder net and wrapped the puck underneath Owen into the net at 7:03.
Ontario finally pulled ahead on the power-play after Blackwater fed Rocco Carzo at the side of the net, and Carzo found enough space between Owen and the post to give the Reign a 4-3 lead at 9:55. Nolan Julseth-White added the extra helper.
With only seconds remaining in regulation, Julseth-White was whistled for delay of game after knocking the net off its moorings, prompting a penalty shot to be awarded to Sivak, but Cannata snatched Sivak's shot out of the air to secure the victory for Ontario.
Cannata earned the win with 25 saves; Owen took the loss with 33 stops.
