Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, Md. - The Frederick Keys are excited to announce that Matthew Grimes has been named the Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week" for the period from April 25-May 1. It marks the first time a Keys player has received a weekly honor in 2016, while it marks the first time the righty has received weekly accolades in his professional career.

In two starts, Grimes, 24, went 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA. Over 11.2 innings, he allowed three runs on 10 hits, struck out eight and walked three. The former Georgia Tech product helped seal the award with a strong start on Sunday against Winston-Salem. Firing off 6.1 innings, Grimes surrendered only two runs on four hits to post his second quality outing of the year. Additionally, it was the longest start by a Keys pitcher this season.

Entering Monday, Grimes is fourth in the Carolina League in ERA (1.75). In his first Carolina League season, the Georgia native spent all of 2015 at Low-A Delmarva. With the Shorebirds he went 10-7 with a 4.14 ERA over 126 innings. He finished the year eighth among Orioles minor leaguers in earned run average. Grimes was originally selected by Baltimore in the 18th round of the 2014 draft.

The Keys hit the road on Monday night, as the club makes its first trip to Wilmington to battle the Blue Rocks. Right-hander Cory Jones (0-1, 5.40) gets the ball for the Keys while righty Pedro Fernandez (2-0, 1.21) makes the start for the Blue Crew. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. Frederick returns home on Tuesday, May 10 when Wilmington comes to town.
