Hillcats Game Suspended in Fifth Inning
May 2, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg scored two runs on one hit in the first inning, but Potomac answered with four runs over the next four frames before intense rain suspended the game in the fifth with the Hillcats trailing 4-2. The two teams will resume the game Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., before they play a seven-inning contest for the nightcap.
HILLCATS BEGIN QUICK IN LATE START
Rain in the afternoon and early evening caused Monday's game to be delayed 19 minutes initially. Once the contest began, Sean Brady promptly struck out the first three Nationals hitters of the game to give the Hillcats their first turn at the plate.
Greg Allen drew a leadoff walk, and Yu-Cheng Chang lined a single to left field to put the first two men aboard. Two batters later, Bobby Bradley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Taylor Murphy walked to bring home the first run. Dorssys Paulino hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Chang, but Bradley was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the inning with the Hillcats on top, 2-0.
POTOMAC ANSWERS
Potomac responded in the second inning with two runs on three hits, beginning with a walk and a base hit by Dale Carey and Drew Ward. Bryan Mejia doubled to right-center field to drive in one, and Alec Keller followed with a single to tie the game, 2-2. With the bases loaded and one out, Brady did a good job minimizing the damage with a pop out and a fly out to end the frame.
In the third, Carey walked again, stole second base, and came home on a Mejia single. Potomac held its 3-2 lead until the fifth inning when Jose Marmolejos hit a solo home run to right field. Carey singled, and the skies opened up at that point to force the game to be suspended.
BACK AT IT TOMORROW
Monday's game will be resumed in the fifth inning with a runner on first and nobody out for Potomac, leading 4-2, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The resumed game will go a full nine innings. Following the conclusion of that contest, the two teams will play a seven-inning game. Fans can listen to the action on 93.3 FM and 1320 AM as well as www.lynchburg-hillcats.com, beginning with the Hillcats On-Deck Show at 5:30 p.m.
