Frederick Keys News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Matthew Grimes tossed seven scoreless innings and Jonah Heim and Conor Bierfeldt blasted two-run home runs to send the Keys to a 7-1 win over Winston-Salem on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
Grimes (6-2) lasted seven innings for the second consecutive start and lowered his earned run average to 1.39 with the win. He allowed four hits in the game, struck out two, didn't walk a batter, and worked with a runner in scoring position just twice.
Grimes and Jordan Stephens were in a pitching duel through four innings, as neither offense could capitalize with runners on base. The Keys loaded the bases with two outs in the second after Bierfeldt was hit by a pitch, Heim singled, and Cam Kneeland walked, but Erick Salcedo flied out. The Dash placed runners on the edges with one out in the fourth, but Grimes induced one of his two double plays of the game to escape.
Frederick would scratch a run across in the fifth against Stephens (0-6). Josh Hart coaxed a base on balls with one out, and two batters later, Wynston Sawyer doubled him home for a 1-0 advantage. In the sixth, Bierfeldt singled to kick things off. Heim would end Stephens' night with a two-run shot to left field to put the Keys up 3-0. Stephens threw 5.1 innings, allowed six hits, three runs, walked two, and struck out seven.
The Keys utilized more extra base hits in the seventh to extend the lead again Kelvis Valerio. Steve Wilkerson doubled to left-center with one out and Sawyer tripled down the right field line to make it 4-0. Sawyer would finish a home run short of the cycle.
Still in the seventh, Bierfeldt clubbed his first long fly of the year to left-center field to score Sawyer and the Keys had a 6-0 edge. Luis Gonzalez would replace Grimes after seven innings and gave up a solo home run to Hunter Jones in the eighth, but the Keys answered in the ninth against Colin Kleven with an RBI single by Aderlin Rodriguez.
The Keys continue their seven-game road trip with game two Wednesday at 7 p.m. LHP Mitch Horacek (1-4, 5.21) starts for the Keys against Dash RHP Spencer Adams (3-0, 2.15). The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
