Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins will take to the ice for their 20th season in 2015-16, and on Friday they introduced a 20th anniversary logo that will be at the forefront of their year-long celebration.
The logo, designed by the Griffins with input from Reebok, consists primarily of a silver shield dominated by a "frozen" numeral 20. Silver, a secondary color for the franchise since its inception, is given prominence due to its similarity to platinum, a modern theme for 20th anniversary gifts. Red, which the Griffins began to feature significantly in 2002 when they cemented their affiliation with the Detroit Red Wings, serves as an accent in the logo's border.
The top of the logo depicts Grand Rapids' skyline, and Griff, the team's iconic mascot, lurks just below, bookended by the years (1996-2016) that define the Griffins' tenure in Grand Rapids.
"The Griffins are proud to be celebrating our 20th season in 2015-16, and we look forward to revealing our plans for this landmark year and inviting our fans to join in the festivities," said Tim Gortsema, the team's senior vice president of business operations. "It's hard to believe that it's been that long since our inaugural puck drop at Van Andel Arena on October 11, 1996. However, the tremendous support of West Michigan has helped carry our franchise since inception and will solidify our position as a top-notch entertainment option for the foreseeable future and the next generation of Griffins fans."
In preparation for their milestone campaign, the Griffins will begin rolling out their 20th anniversary logo next week, when it will grace the cover of the team's full season ticket renewal guide. It will continue to be used in a variety of applications and will ultimately be featured on a third jersey that the Griffins will wear periodically next season. Other aspects of the team's 20-season celebration will be announced this summer and in the lead-up to next season.
