Soo Greyhounds News Release

After opening a three-game road trip with its first win of the season over the Windsor Spitfires on Thursday night, the Soo Greyhounds beat another team that has caused problems on Saturday night.

After dropping the previous five meetings, the Greyhounds went on the road and beat the Saginaw Spirit 4-1 in Ontario Hockey League action at the Dow Event Center on Saturday night in Saginaw.

The game was one that Coach Drew Bannister would be pleased with following the victory.

"It was probably one of our better game on the road," said Bannister. "We controlled pretty much the whole game.

"For probably about 50 minutes of that hockey game, we controlled it."

The team has now won six in a row on the road.

Bannister would also note the confidence of a young group that improves to 27-21-6-1.

"A lot of our young guys and playing with a lot of confidence and are comfortable with their roles on the team," Bannister said. "They feel comfortable with what we're asking them to do and they're doing it and having success."

Rookie forward Jack Kopacka had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds while another rookie forward, Boris Katchouk, chipped in with a shorthanded marker.

Tim Gettinger and Gabe Guertler also scored for the Greyhounds.

Blake Speers picked up a pair of assists.

Goaltender Brandon Halverson made 27 saves in what Bannister would call a "good performance."

"He was good," Bannister said. "I didn't really think he had a lot of work but there were a couple of saves in tight that were self-inflicted opportunities. He made the saves he had to."

Connor Brown had the lone goal for Saginaw, scoring on the power play with just over a minute left in the contest.

Spirit goaltender Evan Cormier made 36 saves.

Saginaw falls to 22-30-3-3 with the loss.

For the Greyhounds, the win helps the team keep pace with the Owen Sound Attack in the OHL's Western Conference playoff race.

The Greyhounds trail the Attack by a single point for sixth in the conference with a game in hand, which will be Sunday afternoon in Sarnia against the Sting.

Sunday's game against Sarnia wraps up a three-game road trip for the Greyhounds, who will return home to play two of three games next week on home ice beginning on Wednesday night in the first game of a home-and-home series with the Flint Firebirds.
