Greg Porter Named American Association League MVP

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts learned Sunday afternoon that left fielder Greg Porter has been named the 2009 American Association Player of the Year.

Porter enters the final day of the regular season as the league's leading hitter at .375. Porter's 21 home runs tie him with teammate Kelly Hunt for the league lead, while his 86 RBIs rank second. Porter also leads the league in hits (140), on-base percentage (.456), slugging percentage (.622), and extra-base hits (48).

The West Point, TX native has been named the American Association Batter of the Week a remarkable four times this season and was also the league's Batter of the Month for June.

Porter set a new Wingnuts' record with a 19-game hitting streak from June 10th-June 30th in which he went 33 for 68 (.485). The streak surpassed Kevin Hooper's club record of 13 set last year. Porter has collected 43 multi-hit games in 2009, which surpass Hooper's mark of 41. Over his last 77 games, Porter is hitting .405.

The 29-year old has drawn 56 walks while striking out just 39 times. From June 1st-June 13th, Porter struck out just one time during a span of 47 at bats. On August 8th at Sioux City, Porter collected the 900th base hit of his career.

Porter is now in his ninth season of professional baseball and was drafted by the Anaheim Angels in 2001 after finishing up a two-sport career at Texas A&M which also saw him star for the Aggies' football team. Porter spent the last two seasons in AAA before coming to the Wingnuts and currently has a career batting average of .302.
