Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla. - It did not take long for the Shreveport-Bossier Captains to close out the 2009 season on Sunday night. In a record time for a nine-inning American Association game, the Pensacola Pelicans beat the Captains 4-0 in just one hour and 31 minutes at Pelican Park.

Ronald Lowe (7-11), starting for the second time in three days after lasting an inning and a third on Friday, retired the first three men he faced, but allowed a leadoff single to Marshall McDougall in the second. Chase Burch then hit an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left-center for his ninth homer of the year, and his first since July 12.

The Captains had chances in the fifth and sixth, but could not score each time. With two outs and no one on in the fifth, Tommy Bryant flied out and Kevin Griffin and Bryan Sabatella grounded out. In the sixth, two errors and a hit loaded the bases, but Jorge Alvarez grounded to Burch at first, who threw home for a force, and then Dwayne White hit one to Burch as well, starting a 3-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Pensacola added a run in the sixth, and the duo of Kevin Cooper and Ulysses Roque kept the Captains off the board in the final four innings in relief of Kieran Mattison (6-3). Mattison, who started the year with Grand Prairie, went five innings, allowing four hits and no walks to win for the second time in two starts with the Pelicans.

Lowe ended up going seven innings, giving up seven hits and four runs with a walk and five strikeouts. Derrick Miramontes pitched the final inning, giving up a hit but getting a double play and a groundout to face the minimum three hitters.
