St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 30, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints knew their playoff fate before they took the field on Sunday evening. With the Lincoln Saltdogs beating the Sioux Falls Canaries earlier in the day, the Saints knew their game against the Sioux City Explorers wouldn't mean anything and that the Saltdogs were going to the playoffs. The Saints still went out and defeated the Explorers 5-3 at Midway Stadium in front of 6,545 finishing the season 49-47.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Alex Fonseca singled and stole second base. He moved to third on a ground out and the Saints would end up loading the bases on back-to-back walks to Brent Krause and Jason Cooper. Jacob Butler then hit a grounder to third in which Derek Schermerhorn stepped on third for one out, but his throw to first hit Butler which allowed Fonseca to score.

The Explorers tied it in the second when Schermerhorn walked, stole second, then stole third and scored on catcher Jeff Eure's throwing error.

The Saints wasted little time taking a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second as Andrew Schmiesing and Steve Butler reached on back-to-back singles. With two outs Josh Alley drove them both home with a single to left.

The Explorers knotted the game at three in the fifth as Tyler Meigs led off with a double, moved to third on a single from Boomer Berry, who stole second, and the two came home on a Dustin Jones single.

The Saints regained the lead for good in the sixth when Schmiesing led off with a walk, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Fonseca's RBI single. He finished the night 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

The final run scored in the seventh when Jason Cooper walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Eure's single

Saints starter Tom Buske went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out three to pick up his fifth win of the season. Relievers Ryan Ariail and Jim Brower pitched the final 3.0 innings allowing one hit while striking out four.
