Greenville Drive News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Greenville Drive took the field as the Ranas de Rio Saturday night at Fluor Field and gave a late push, but the Ranas could not complete the comeback. The Winston-Salem Dash held on for a 7-6 win to claim the series 4-1.
Greenville starter Yusniel Padron-Artiles (1-1) suffered the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4.0 innings. He walked one but struck out four.
Winston-Salem reliever Fraser Ellard (2-1) earned the win after a scoreless inning of work, with his lone blemish to his line being a walk. Edgar Navarro (1) entered for the final 2.0 innings and held the Ranas scoreless for a save.
Alex Binelas powered the Greenville offense on the night, notching a three-hit game for the squad's only multi-hit effort. Two of his hits went for extra bases - a double and a moonshot home run off the video board. Binelas tallied two RBI on the night. Nick Decker and Tyler Esplin also contributed extra base knocks with their lone hits by way of a double and triple, respectively.
Winston-Salem wasted no time jumping ahead. Back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the first gave the Dash a quick 2-0 lead.
An RBI single in the top of the second made the score 3-0, but that is all the Dash would get as Tyler Esplin nailed a runner trying to advance to third with an excellent throw for the third out of the inning.
The Dash stretched their lead for a third consecutive inning with a sacrifice fly and RBI single in the top of the third. The deficit stood at 5-0.
Greenville struck for a run in the bottom of the third. After Alex Binelas doubled, Nicholas Northcut drove him home when he laced a single into left field. The Ranas trailed 5-1.
Winston-Salem got that run back in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly. They pulled back out to 6-1.
A three-run fourth allowed the Ranas to pull closer. Tyler Esplin started the inning off with a triple, and Antoni Flores brought him in with an infield single. A double and a walk loaded the bases for Ceddane Rafaela, who recorded an RBI with a fielder's choice. Matthew Lugo dropped an RBI single into center field to cap the frame and make the score 6-4.
A balk in the top of the fifth allowed another Dash runner to score, extending their lead back out to 7-4.
The Ranas de Rio pulled to within a run with a long ball in the bottom of the sixth. Rafaela was hit by a pitch to get on base. With a full count, Binelas blasted a moonshot off the video board in right field to plate both Rafaela and himself. The Ranas were within a run once more, 7-6.
Greenville gave one final push in the bottom of the ninth. The Ranas had two runners on base with one out, but their comeback efforts fell just short with back-to-back strikeouts to close out the contest. The Winston-Salem Dash held on to win 7-6.
Greenville will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the series finale. First pitch against the Dash is set for 3:05 p.m.
