Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits earned a standings point in their final home game of 2020 against South Carolina Stingrays. The Bits erased two separate one-goal deficits before ultimately falling in a shootout, 3-2. Both teams rematch tomorrow afternoon in Charleston at 3:05 p.m.
Dylan Steman started the scoring for the Stingrays at 2:30 after burying a turn-around chance from the low-slot past Ryan Bednard. Less than four minutes later, Greenville tied the score courtesy of twin magic. Jack Poehling fed twin brother Nick Poehling on the backdoor for the equalizer at 6:13. Shots on goal after 20 minutes were 14-9 Greenville with the score tied.
Next period, both teams traded seven shots and added a goal apiece. Following a neutral zone turnover, Mason Morelli scored unassisted at 9:25 to put the Rays back in front. Samuel Jardine scored for the Swamp Rabbits at 17:20 with a center-point blast while both teams skated 4-on-4.
Goaltenders Hunter Shepard and Ryan Bednard put forth valiant efforts in the third period to keep the game tied. Seven minutes of sudden-death overtime did not decide a winner, and the game progressed to a shootout for the first time this season. Andrew Cherniwchan and Dan DeSalvo scored in the skills competition and Shepard stopped all four Greenville shooters to preserve a Stingrays 3-2 win.
Both teams rematch tomorrow afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum with puck drop scheduled for 3:05 p.m. Greenville and South Carolina will meet again at Bon Secours Wellness Arena on New Year's Day. Ring in the "New Year with Cold Beer" on January 1st with an early 2:05 p.m. start time at The Well. Ticket information is available online at SwampRabbits.com.
