Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Despite Grant Green's three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, the Sacramento River Cats fell to the visiting Las Vegas 51s by a score of 10-5 in Thursday night's season-opener at Raley Field.

The 51s jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on three hits. The Cats responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second when Wilton, Calif.-native David Freitas scored Scott Moore on a grounder to shortstop Omar Quintanilla. Las Vegas pushed its lead to 4-1 in the third just before the River Cats scored their second run of the contest on a Michael Taylor run-scoring single up the middle. The 51s plated four in the fifth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth, extending their lead to 10-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, Freitas led off with a double, followed by a Jemile Weeks single, bringing Green to the plate. He took two pitches for strikes, before hitting Sacramento's first homer of the season over the wall in left field, cutting the lead to 10-5. The next two River Cats batters-Conner Crumbliss and Michael Choice-each drew walks before 51s left-handed reliever Robert Carson came in and shut the door, getting Taylor out on an infield fly, then getting Moore to ground into a double play, giving Las Vegas the 10-5 win.

Green paced Sacramento offensively, going 1-for-5 with three runs driven in. Taylor and Freitas each went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while River Cats newcomer Scott Moore reached base three times on three four-pitch walks. River Cats starter Andrew Werner allowed eight earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.1 innings pitched in his River Cats debut. Right-handed reliever Brian Gordon allowed the other two Las Vegas runs in his two innings of work.

Las Vegas starting pitcher Zack Wheeler gave up two earned runs on three hits and three walks in 3.1 innings pitched. 51s catcher Travis d'Arnaud went 2-for-3 with two walks, two doubles and two runs scored.

The loss brings Sacramento's Opening Day record to 9-5. The River Cats are now also 9-5 in home openers.

The two teams return to Raley Field at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night for Fireworks Friday, when River Cats right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez (0-0, No ERA) takes on 51s righty Chris Schwinden (0-0, No ERA).
