Tucson Drops Season Opener

The Salt Lake Bees sent ten batters to the plate in a five-run seventh inning in their 9-5 win over the Tucson Padres Thursday. It was the first game of the season at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, Tucson outfielder Jaff Decker hit an opposite-field home run to give the Padres their first run of the season. Rene Rivera hit a three-run homer over the left field wall in the seventh to tie the score, 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Tucson reliever Tommy Layne walked Chris Snyder with the bases loaded to give Salt Lake a one-run lead. The Bees brought home three runs on the very next play when Daniel Robertson dropped a fly ball in center field with the bases loaded. John Hester's RBI single plated the final run of the inning for Salt Lake and put the Bees ahead, 9-4.

Gregorio Petit hit the Padres' third home run of the game in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as the Bees held on for the victory. Salt Lake reliever David Carpenter earned the win, while Tucson's Brad Boxberger was charged with his first loss of the year. Tim Stauffer started for Tucson and went four innings, yielding seven hits, four earned runs and a walk.
