Iowa Cubs News Release
Albuquerque, NM - The Albuquerque Isotopes (1-0) used a three-run first inning and a seven-run seventh to beat the Iowa Cubs (0-1) 10-3 at Isotopes Park tonight. The Cubs are now 0-3 all-time in season-openers against the Isotopes and have lost 10 straight games at Isotopes Park dating back to June, 2011.
The Isotopes took advantage of a pair of Cubs' errors in their first-inning rally that was capped by a two-run single by Rusty Ryal. Cubs' starter Chris Rusin settled in after that rocky first and worked through five innings without allowing another run. The lefty allowed just one hit and struck out four over his final four innings.
The Cubs battled back against 'Topes' starter Stephen Fife in the third inning. Logan Watkins led off with a single for his first triple-A hit and moved to third on a base hit by Brett Jackson. Brian Bogusevic followed with a solid single to center to drive in Watkins. As Jackson went to third, the 'Topes caught Bogusevic in a rundown between first and second base. Bogusevic stayed alive long enough to allow Jackson to race home and cut the 'Topes lead to 3-2.
The Cubs tied the game in the top of the fifth against reliever Red Patterson. With one out, Bogusevic reached on an infield single for his third hit. After a walk to Brad Nelson, there was a popout, but Ty Wright came through with a two-out hit for an RBI to tie the game.
Casey Coleman followed Rusin with a scoreless sixth inning before the Isotopes broke the game open in the seventh. Jesus Flores started the inning with a single off Jensen Lewis and pinch-hitter Tony Gwynn, Jr. moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Matt Angle's single advanced Flores to third and brought Dee Gordon to the plate. Gordon hit a chopper up the middle that shortstop Edwin Maysonet fielded in front of second base. After freezing the runner at third, Maysonet threw to first, but Bogusevic couldn't find the bag and was charged with an error as Gordon reached to load the bases. Elian Herrera followed with a two-run single and Alex Castellanos lined a two-run triple to right-center field that gave the 'Topes a 7-3 lead. Lewis gave way to Zach Putnam, who allowed an RBI single to Brian Barden and a two-run double to Flores that capped the 'Topes' rally.
Geison Agauasviva (1-0) finished the top of the sixth inning for Patterson and worked a perfect seventh to earn the win for the 'Topes. Angel Castro and Josh Wall each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game. Lewis (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Cubs. Rafael Dolis finished the game with a perfect eighth.
The Cubs and Isotopes continue this series with game two tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 Central Time at Isotopes Park. RH Drew Carpenter will make his Iowa debut against RH Matt Magill for the 'Topes. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 2:45.
Fans are invited to attend Iowa's Open House on Saturday from 10am-2pm at Principal Park. Fans can tour the newly renovated home and visitors' clubhouse and received a free hot dog, chips, and soft drink at the Cub Club. All attendees will also receive a free ticket to a future Iowa Cubs game.
