Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., - Tyler Scott's goal with 19.6 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Bakersfield Condors a 3-2 victory over the Long Beach Ice Dogs in front of 4,274 fans at the Rabobank Arena.
Long Beach scored the evening's first goal when Lucas Lawson threw a wrist shot past Ryan Munce off of a pass from Christian Larrivee. Steeve Villeneuve assisted as the Ice Dogs took the early 1- 0 lead just 2:53 into the game.
Bakersfield answered back when Scott Balan pushed the puck from the near corner to the crease at the end of a Condors power play. Mathieu Brunelle grazed the puck on his shot in front of netminder Greg Hewitt, but Andrew Ianiero followed up and connected to tie the game at 1-1.
Off the ensuing face-off, Marco Rosa weaved through three Condors and behind the net to put a wrist shot past Munce just 11 seconds after Ianiero's tally. Rosa's goal went unassisted as the Ice Dogs regained a 2-1 lead.
Following the expiration of a Long Beach power play, Andrew Ianiero tapped a pass off the near wall to Mathieu Brunelle, who streaked along the left wing and into the offensive zone. Brunelle fired a wrist shot through the five hole to tie the game at 2-2 with 13:43 remaining in the second period.
Brunelle's goal carried a tied score through the third period, which saw only a combined 13 shots between the two teams before heading to overtime.
With 19.6 seconds remaining in the extra frame, Andrew Ianiero pushed a backhander to Tyler Scott at the base of the near circle. Scott faked a hard wrister, then pushed an off-speed shot through the legs of both Marco Rosa and Hewitt to give the Condors the 3-2 victory.
Ryan Munce earned the victory, stopping 44 of 46 Long Beach shots including 22 in the second period. Greg Hewitt was credited with the loss despite making 22 saves on 25 Condor attempts.
Other notes: The Condors made a handful of roster moves prior to the game. Bakersfield placed Scott Borders on the 30-Day Injured Reserve and Sean Venedam on the 7-Day Injured Reserve, and Oriel McHugh was activated from the 7-Day IR. In addition, the Condors signed forward Nello Ferrara and forward Daniel Kim. Bakersfield's home record against Pacific Division opponents improves to 8-1-3 with the victory.
For the record: Bakersfield improves to 28-21-5 on the season and move within six points of 2nd place Long Beach. The Ice Dogs falls to 30-19- 7, but clinches a Kelly Cup Playoff spot with the overtime loss.
Magic number: The magic number for clinching a Kelly Cup Playoff spot is now four. Any combination of four points won by Bakersfield or lost by Stockton will result in the Condors clinching a berth in the post-season.
The Condors host the Phoenix Roadrunners on Friday, March 10th for the Youth Jersey Giveaway. The first 2,000 fans 12 and under will receive a Sean Venedam replica jersey courtesy of KGET-TV 17, The Big 96.5 and McDonalds.
