Augusta Lynx News Release
The action starts at 7:35pm tonight at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center as the Augusta Lynx host the Pensacola Ice Pilots to kick off a stretch of four games in five days.
Augusta will be trying to shake off a 5-2 loss against the Columbia Inferno on Saturday while Pensacola snapped a seven game losing streak by beating the South Carolina Stingrays 4-3 last night in Charleston.
This is the eighth of nine meetings between the two teams with Augusta leading the season series 5-2-0. Lynx left wing Nicholas Corbeil leads the season series in scoring with 11 points on four goals and seven assists, while goaltender Jason Wolfe brings a 4-2-0 record against the Ice Pilots to go with a 3.31 goals against average and an .897 save percentage.
Pensacola has struggled all season but as of late have made several roster moves. Defensemen Adam Tichauer (Brown University) and Chris Trick (Notre Dame - CCHA) have both joined the team out of college to shore up the blue line while trades have brought the likes of Bogdan Rudenko from Florida, Pete Gardiner from Victoria, and Doug MacIver from San Diego.
"You can't look past any team at this time of the year," said Lynx head coach and director of hockey operations Bob Ferguson. "We know where we both sit in the playoff picture, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous, especially with the personnel they've been adding."
Goaltender David Cann picked up just his second win last night against South Carolina, but his 4.77 GAA and .875 save percentage has been largely tallied on a team that ranks last in goals against per game with 4.12 and shots against at 39.17 per game.
"With three defensemen out of our lineup, we have to take care of our own end," said Ferguson in reference to the recall of Eric Lundberg, Phil Cole, and Lee Jacobson to the American Hockey League. "We've brought back John Whitwell for (tonight's) game to help us out on defense."
Indeed, Augusta will have five defensemen including Whitwell dressed for tonight's game, and a total of 14 skaters. But the team has pulled together in tougher situation, and still look to put more space between themselves and the Columbia Inferno in the playoff race while still trying to catch idle Charlotte and South Carolina.
Pensacola will return to face the Lynx on Sunday at 4:05 pm, while Augusta travels to Greenville for back-to-back games against the Grrrowl Friday and Saturday. All games can be heard on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630, starting with the Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show one half-hour before faceoff.
