LANSING, Mich. - Cole St. Clair struck out Mike McDade with the potential game-tying runs at second and third base, helping the Great Lakes Loons (29-22; 69-52) hold off the Lansing Lugnuts (19-31; 45-74), 7-5, before on Monday night at Oldsmobile Park.

The game was delayed 78 minutes at the start by rain before turning into a wild rollercoaster affair.

The Loons lost an early 2-0 lead to a Lugnuts three-run third inning rally, took the lead back with a three-run fourth, only to watch Lansing tie the score at 5-5 in the fifth.

In the top of the eighth inning, the visitors seized the lead for good. Jerry Sands scored all the way from first base after center fielder Kenny Wilson misplayed Esteban Lopez's single. Dee Gordon followed with an RBI double against Lansing reliever Jason Roenicke (1-3) to put the Loons on top, 7-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, Great Lakes closer Cole St. Clair walked Kenny Wilson and gave up a base hit to Chris Emanuele to put the tying runs on base. After Brian Van Kirk struck out, Johermyn Chavez's ground out to first moved Wilson to third and Emanuele to second. That brought up McDade, who had already notched three hits in the game. St. Clair whiffed him to end the game, picking up his 12th save in the process.

Steve Smith (4-1) earned the win for the Loons with five innings out of the bullpen in relief of starter Aaron Miller, who struck out eight batters in three innings.

In the losing cause, Brian Van Kirk hit his 13th home run of the season and Johermyn Chavez added three hits and two runs scored in five at-bats.

The two teams play the finale in their four-game series at 7:05 p.m. on a Dollar Dog Tuesday at Oldsmobile Park, with Lugnuts right-hander Chase Lirette (3-3, 5.79) taking on Loons lefty Geison Aguasviva (4-1, 1.51).
