Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits were unable to contain the league's best offense for the second straight night on Monday, as the Peoria Chiefs scored three runs in the top of the first and went on to a 7-1 win at Modern Woodmen Park.
Quad Cities (23-27, 53-67) will look to salvage a series split on Tuesday as Scott Schneider takes the mound for his Modern Woodmen Park debut in the finale of the four-game series. He will have his hands full with a Peoria (30-20, 68-51) offense that slugged its league-leading 100th home run of the year on Monday while raising its league-high team batting average to .276.
After evening up the series with a 15-0 rout on Sunday night, the Chiefs picked up right where they left off on Monday. The first four batters they sent to the plate in the top of the first collected hits, starting with Brett Jackson's line-drive single to right and Ryan Flaherty's opposite-field liner to left. Rebel Ridling poked a groundball double down the first base line that scored Jackson and advanced Flaherty to third, while Kyler Burke capped the rally with a liner to left-center that plated both Flaherty and Ridling. Before an out had been recorded, Peoria jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Flaherty added a solo homer in the top of the third - his third bomb in as many games - before the River Bandits reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Jarred Bogany singled with one out and moved to third thanks to a stolen base and a throwing error. Xavier Scruggs drove him in with a fielder's choice groundout as Quad Cities pulled to within 4-1.
In the top of the sixth, however, Peoria blew the game open. There was one out when a walk and a hit batsman put a pair of runners on the bases, and Nelson Perez promptly brought them both home with a two-run triple to straight-away center field. With the infield in, Michael Brenly followed with a blooper to left-center that dropped to give the Chiefs a 7-1 advantage.
Austin Bibens-Dirkx (5-1) picked up the win for Peoria, throwing six strong innings and allowing just three hits and one unearned run. He combined with relievers Marcus Hatley and Chris Huseby on a four-hitter, as Chiefs pitching has held the River Bandits offense to just one run on eight hits over the last two games.
Scott McGregor (6-9) took the loss for Quad Cities. Though he entered play boasting a stellar 2.93 ERA since June 12, the righty was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings of work.
