South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Comstock Park, MI - West Michigan used another big inning on Monday night to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks 8-3 at Fifth Third Ballpark. With the loss, the Hawks fall two games under .500 in the second half.

South Bend actually plated the first run of the game in the top of the second against West Michigan starter Adam Wilk (WP, 2-1). Justin Parker started the inning with a double to center, extending his hitting streak to five games. Clayton Conner followed with a single to put runners on the corners, moving his hitting streak to six games. One out later, Rossmel Perez singled to right, scoring Parker for the 1-0 lead.

That would be the only run allowed by Wilk, as he tossed 6.2 innings to earn his second win of the season.

West Michigan immediately answered, with Mike Gosse driving in Billy Nowlin in the bottom of the second to knot the game at one each.

The bottom of the third was the big inning for the Whitecaps, as they scored five times against South Bend starter Brett Moorhouse (LP, 5-11). A costly error allowed Gustavo Nunez to reach, and opened the flood gates. By the time the dust settled, West Michigan had scored five runs on four hits with an error, a walk, a hit batter, and a sacrifice fly mixed in. Alden Carrithers had a RBI triple with Ben Guez adding a two run double as the big hits in the inning.

West Michigan extended to lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth against Bayron Zepeda (ND). Gosse and Avisail Garcia had back-to-back doubles to score the first run of the inning, and Carrithers had a RBI single for the second run.

The Silver Hawks rallied in the eighth against Erik Crichton (ND). Isaias Asencio, Jake Elmore, and A.J. Pollock all singled to start the inning, and Asencio scored when right fielder Garcia threw errantly to the infield. Reynaldo Navarro followed with the fourth straight hit, an RBI single to center, scoring Elmore to make it an 8-3 game. Crichton settled down, getting the final three outs and stranding two runners on base.

Sean Morgan (ND) was a bright spot on the mound for the Hawks, tossing 3.0 innings without allowing a hit from the sixth through the eighth.
