Montgomery Biscuits News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Flo. - It was Sunday funday for the Biscuits (43-37) on Sunday afternoon in northeast Florida as they swept the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (31-47), 5-4, and 18-9, in a doubleheader to win the series and their fourth-straight game at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The first game of the twin-bill featured a pitcher's duel between Montgomery starter Genesis Cabrera and Jacksonville starter Merandy Gonzalez, who each pitched four scoreless frames to begin the contest. Things would change in the top of the fifth, however, when Nick Solak climbed in with the bases loaded and lined a screamer of a grand slam into the right field bleachers to put the Biscuits up 4-0. The grand slam was the Biscuits' first this season, and first since Justin Williams' on July 21, 2017.
The Jumbo Shrimp would mount a comeback in the bottom of the fifth against Cabrera, with Brian Miller's RBI-single, and a three-run laser beam of a homer that dinged that left field foul pole off the bat of Monte Harrison to knot things up at four.
After David Rodriguez reached on an error by Jacksonville shortstop Joe Dunand to begin the seventh, and then moved to second on a Thomas Milone sac bunt, Peter Maris stood in and knocked an RBI-single to put the Biscuits in front again, and Roel Ramirez (2-1) shut the Shrimp down in the bottom half of the seventh to close out game one.
Game two could not have gotten off to a worse start for the Biscuits, with the Jumbo Shrimp tagging opener Mike Broadway and reliever Brandon Lawson for seven runs in the bottom of the first. Dalton Kelly stroked a three-run homer in the second to get the Biscuits back in it, but Montgomery still trailed 9-5 at the end of three, thanks to the catch of the year by right fielder Nathan Lukes, who robbed Isan Diaz of a three-run bomb in right field to end the third.
The Biscuits then ripped off a season-high nine runs in the top of the fourth thanks to RBIs from Solak, Brett Sullivan, Lukes, and Kelly, before Mike Brosseau clubbed the team's second grand slam of the afternoon. It was just the second time in club history where the Biscuits have bopped two grand slams on the same day (Elijah Dukes and Delmon Young both hit one in the same inning in a 20-2 win at Jacksonville on June 19, 2005).
Peter Maris added an RBI-double in the fourth, David Rodriguez a three-run double in the fifth, and Brosseau a sac fly in the seventh to give the third baseman five RBIs, which ties the Indiana native with Brand Lowe for most RBIs in a game for a Biscuit this season. The 18 runs were the most the Biscuits have scored in any game this year, eclipsing their previous high of 13, and proved to be their largest comeback of the season, down seven at the end of the first.
The Biscuits will try to make it five in a row on Monday night when Sam McWilliams (2-4) takes on Nick Neidert (7-4) at 6:05 PM.
The Biscuits will head back to Montgomery to open up a four-game series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Wednesday night at 6:35 PM CT for their Independence Day Celebration and MAX Fireworks. The series will also feature a Patriotic T-shirt giveaway on Thursday, July 5, Video Game Night with a Post-game E-Sports Tournament and MAX Fireworks on Friday, July 6, and Christmas in July and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, July 7.
