Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite tying the game late, the Birmingham Barons (38-40) couldn't execute with chances to win as they fell 4-3 in 11 innings to the Jackson Generals (43-36) on Sunday afternoon at Regions Field. The loss evens up the six-game series at two games apiece.
Turning Point: After Alex Call's check-swing double scored two runs to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth for the Barons, Jameson Fisher was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. With the winning run standing at third, pinch-hitter Keon Barnum stepped to the plate. On one pitch, reliever Yoan Lopez ended the threat by inducing an inning-ending double play, sending the game to extra innings.
Moments That Mattered: In the bottom of the 10th, the Barons had a chance to win after Jose Ruiz pitched a scoreless top of the inning. However, they were again held scoreless as Joel Booker popped up his bunt attempt, and Barnum was caught off second for another double play. In the 11th, Josh Prince's RBI single off Ryan Burr (L, 2-2) plated the eventual winning run, as the Barons could do no damage in the bottom of the frame.
Facts And Figures: Making his Regions Field debut, White Sox No. 4 prospect Dylan Cease was sharp. The only blemish on his start was Prince's solo home run in the top of the second that gave the visitors the lead. Over 7.0 innings, Cease gave up the one run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
By The Numbers: The game marked the first extra-inning home game for the Barons under the new Minor League Baseball rules. At the plate, Zack Collins tied the game in the sixth with a solo home run, his 10th of the season, off Jackson All-Star Taylor Widener. In relief, Ruiz pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to keep the Barons close.
Up Next: Game five of the six-game series is set for Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Matt Tomshaw (3-4, 5.92) is set to start for Birmingham against Jackson's Justin Donatella (3-4, 3.73). Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
