Jackson Generals News Release
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, got the short end of the stick in a pitchers' duel on Saturday, falling 1-0 to the Birmingham Barons at Regions Field. The Generals (42-36, 3-6 Second Half) finish the month of June with an 11-14 record, while Birmingham (38-39, 6-3 Second Half) ends the month 14-11.
Ryan Atkinson (3-8, 4.28 ERA) treated the Generals to a season-best seven-inning effort, featuring seven strikeouts on 94 pitches. The right-hander allowed three of the five hits against him to go for extra bases, with two of them coming back-to-back in the fourth inning to give Birmingham their only run. Wei-Chieh Huang carried the Generals' hopes through the eighth with a scoreless appearance, but the run support never came. Atkinson suffered his fifth defeat when giving up two or fewer runs this season, as well as his fourth loss in which the Generals were shut out.
Offensively, the Generals met their match in left-hander Bernardo Flores (1-1, 1.29 ERA), who out-did Atkinson with seven shutout frames while inducing 11 groundball outs. Doubles by Marty Herum and Rudy Flores went begging, as the Generals stayed hitless with men in scoring position for the second straight contest. Left-hander Colton Turner (S, 3) earned the save with two scoreless innings in closing, dropping the Generals' batting average against lefties to .253. No Generals had multiple hits.
