The SeaWolves dropped the series opener to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-2 on Friday night in Manchester.
The 'Cats jumped ahead in the first against Erie starter Tyler Alexander. Richard Urena tripled with one out and scored on a Dwight Smith, Jr. groundout for a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the fourth against Fisher Cats starter Taylor Cole. With two outs, Anthony Gose connected on a solo home run to right, tying the game at 1-1. The home run for Gose was his third of the season and second in as many games.
New Hampshire quickly regained the lead in the last of the fourth. Smith led off with a single and Rowdy Tellez connected on a base hit, pushing Smith into scoring position. Ryan Lavarnway and Derrick Loveless each connected singles, plating a pair for a 3-1 lead. Jason Leblebijian walked to load the bases for Shane Opitz . Opitz lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lavarnway for a 4-1 lead.
The Fisher Cats added a fifth run in the last of the fifth when Tellez blasted a solo home run, his 14th, off the scoreboard in right center making it a 5-1 game.
A pair of Fisher Cats errors in the ninth inning enabled Erie to plate a run but would get no closer, falling 5-2.
Cole (3-4) earned the win for the Cats allowing a run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.
Alexander (0-1) took the loss in his Double-A debut allowing five runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
The SeaWolves and Fisher Cats meet in the middle game of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Lefty Josh Turley (4-7, 4.08 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Conner Greene (3-3, 4.28 ERA).
