Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nick Gorneault drove in five runs and Steven Shell struck out seven in seven solid innings to lead the Salt Lake Bees to a 7-2 victory over the Portland Beavers before 5,097 at PGE Park Tuesday afternoon.

The Bees, who won three of four games in the set, have won four of their last five games.

Gorneault, who hit into a pair of RBI groundouts early in the game, keyed Salt Lake's four-run fifth inning with a bases-loaded triple.

Jeff Mathis was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Bees (75-55), who increased their division lead over third-place Portland to 12 games.

Matt Blank, getting the spot start in place of recently promoted Tim Stauffer, gave up seven runs (6 earned) on four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings on the hill for the loss in his first start with the Beavers (63-67).

Shell, meanwhile, earned just his second win since June 17 by holding the Beavers to two runs and five hits. The right-hander came into the game with a 1-6 record over his previous nine starts.

Jack Cust belted a two-run homer, his 25th of the season, in the second inning for the Beavers, who suffered their first home-series loss since being swept by Las Vegas in a three-game series at PGE Park, July 4-6. Terrmel Sledge stretched his hitting streak to 12 games by going 1-for-3 with a walk.

The Beavers begin their final home series of the year Wednesday night, taking on the Las Vegas 51s in the first of a five-game set that begins at 7:05 p.m.
