Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) lost their 8th game of the season on Saturday night, losing to the New Mexico Scorpions by a final score of 5-1. It was the second game of a home-and-home series with New Mexico, as the Gorillas were coming off of a 2-1 overtime loss last night in Rio Rancho. Amarillo fell to 0-2-2 against New Mexico so far this season, and they will see the Scorpions eight more times by the end of the season.
New Mexico started the scoring in the first period, when Chris Robertson scored a short-handed goal at the13:53 mark giving the Scorpions a 1-0 lead. Robertson took the puck away from Gorillas Defenseman Trevor Socholotuk and skated through the neutral zone with only one defender back. He carried into the Gorillas zone down the left wing side and lifted a wrist shot over the glove hand of Amarillo tender Dan McWhinney. It was the only goal of the period, and just like last night, the Gorillas found themselves down 1-0 after one period.
In the second period, the Scorpions added to their lead, Craig Macdonald got in on the act scoring his third goal of the year at the 11:23 mark. Amarillo would answer back with a goal from Shaun Arvai, as the rookie got his second goal of the season 15:47 into the period. Amarillo was re-energized as they cut the lead in half, trailing 2-1 after the second period ended.
It was New Mexico that would come out with energy in the third period however, as they built on their lead, getting three goals in the final frame. Dominic Osman got the team's second short-handed tally scoring at the 2:33 mark on a straight shot from the slot and before it was over, Mitch Stephens and Blair Stayzer would add goals as well making the final score 5-1 in favor of the Scorpions.
Amarillo dropped to 1-8-3 on the season with the loss, and they continue to reside in last place in the Southwest division with only five points. The Gorillas will look to get back on track when they take on the Wichita Thunder on Wednesday the 21st at the Amarillo Civic Center, before hitting the road for two weekend games in Colorado on the 23rd and 24th.
