Scorpions Jump On Gorillas

[AMARILLO, Tex.]-The Scorpions swept a home-and-home series with a 5-1 victory Saturday night in Amarillo. The win pushed the Scorps above .500 for the first time this season.

For the second straight night the Scorpions used their special teams to grab the lead. Late in the first period, Kevin Harvey found a streaking Chris Robertson. Robertson sped into the Amarillo zone and tucked a shorthanded goal just under the crossbar.

New Mexico extended their lead in the second period when Craig Macdonald picked up his third goal of the season. The Gorillas grabbed momentum when Shaun Arvai's shot deflected off defenseman Michael Kolarz's stick and into the Scorps net, making it a 2-1 game.

The Scorpions started the third period shorthanded and hanging on to a one-goal lead. For the second time on the night, New Mexico scored a shorthanded goal. Dominic Osman ripped a shot from the slot and gave the Scorps a 3-1 lead.

Mitch Stephens extended the New Mexico lead with a shot from the high slot. With only 16 seconds remaining, Blair Stayzer gave the Scorpions their fifth goal as he pumped it through goaltender Dan McWhinney.

New Mexico heads home for a Sunday 3:15 p.m. afternoon affair against Arizona. Following the game there will be a skate with the Scorpions. If you don't own skates, skate rentals will be available for free courtesy of Blades Multiplex Arenas.
